Norway
Spruce Trees
The
Norway spruce is one of the most
widely planted spruces and is used
extensively in large scale landscape
plantings such as parks, golf
courses, highways, and public
buildings. These trees
are excellent for a variety of uses,
as they are one of the largest,
hardiest and most adaptable spruces
in the world.
The Norway spruce tree is a very
fast growing tree that can reach
heights up to 150 feet. Generally
speaking, Norway spruce trees should reach 5 feet after
approximately 7 years, with a good
2 year seedling start. In the first 25
years of their growth, they generally
grow 2 feet per year. The dark needles on the Norway
spruce trees are short and will only
grow to about an inch long. Also,
their dense, compact character
provides attractive, dependable
evergreens which change little in
effect over a long period of time.
The symmetrical form results in
plants with strong outlines and
formal habit. They are bright green
to purplish in youth, changing to a
luscious dark green with age.
These trees are not for a small yard
and they do best in full sunshine.
They have a strong root system that
allows them to withstand
winds up to 100 mph, so these are
very hardy trees. If you have any
