Fraser Fir Christmas Trees
The Fraser fir Christmas tree is the
most popular Christmas tree in the
United States and grows in abundance
in our area of Western North
Carolina. In the past, the Fraser
fir Christmas tree has been the tree
of choice for the White House and,
generally speaking, is everyone’s
favorite Christmas tree. It has been
designated the Cadillac of Christmas
trees.
The popular Fraser fir Christmas
tree was first recognized and named
for John Fraser, the Scottish
botanist who explored the
Appalachian Mountains of North
Carolina in the late 1700s.
Reaching a maximum of 80 feet with a
pyramidal shape, these trees grow
naturally only in the Appalachian
Mountains, at an elevation higher
than 3,000 feet.
Fraser fir Christmas trees are the
perfect Christmas tree for those
that love the “Christmas” scent they
provide and love a traditional
Christmas tree look.
Fraser fir Christmas trees have a
distinctive pyramid shape with
horizontal stiff branches, opening
up with age. They are a
shining dark green in color. In youth, they are mostly conical
and extremely symmetrical in
outline. Fraser fir Christmas
trees are considered slow growing
landscape plants with their stiff,
rigid habit, and specific cultural
requirements placing restriction on
extensive use. They are best
used in groupings, near large
buildings, as specimens and screen.
